Background Statement
Founded in 1920 by the Harold H. Bair American Legion Post 14, the Hanover Lancers Drum & Bugle Corps
has served York County for more than a century as a community-centered performing arts organization.
Originally created to provide veterans and local youth with musical and civic engagement opportunities, the
corps evolved into a regional cultural fixture, performing in parades, competitions, and concerts across the Mid-Atlantic region until a brief hiatus during the 1980s. Revitalized in 1990 as a non-competitive ensemble,
the Lancers now bring together nearly 100 members of all ages, fostering mentorship, intergenerational
connection, and lifelong participation in the arts. The corps appears annually in many local events, before
thousands of spectators. Support for the Lancers strengthens accessible arts programming, preserves a
historic musical tradition, and ensures that future generations can experience the camaraderie and
community pride that define the drum corps activity.
