"Our goal is to make the world a little warmer one coat at a time!" This is the mission of Coats of Friendship, whose Board of Directors is composed of elementary, middle, and high school students. They are commitment to collecting used, dusty, or lightly used coats from anyone willing to give, as a non-profit (501c3) organization.  Coats of Friendship is entering it's 11th season of 2025-2026. 

The organization began when the President/Founder, Tristan Rankin, was in 1st grade and just 6 years old.  He started it along with his brother, Emerson Rankin, who was only 4 years old and serves as Vice President.  Currently, Tristan is a 11th grader and Emerson is a 8th grader who have distributed 10,000 coats during the 2024-2025 fall and winter season.  

 

Coats of Friendship collects coats of all sizes for men, women, and children, alongside hats, gloves, and scarves. What sets the organization apart is the personal touch each coat carries—a handwritten note attached by students and friends, making every recipient feel valued and cared for.  Coats of Friendship reflects a deep sense of compassion and inclusivity for anyone who needs support.

 

At Coats of Friendship, the focus is clear: to make the world warmer by ensuring that anyone in need receives a warm jacket during the winter months. The commitment to supporting all is the center; there are no strings attached, and individuals can receive a coat without showing ID, verification of income, or signing in. Coats of Friendship’s mission to keep all people of York County warm this upcoming winter resonates deeply with their values of compassion and community support.

 

Coats of Friendship’s upcoming project is to expand efforts and work towards collecting over 10,000 coats for the fall and winter 2025/2026 season. This ambitious project will undoubtedly have a significant impact, keeping all of York County and beyond warm and cared for during the colder months.  We will use these funds will aid in achieving the goal of keeping the community warm and cared for during the winter season.  We are confident that these resources will be utilized effectively to continue the impactful initiatives and make a positive difference in the lives of those in the area.

Coats of Friendship’s Board of Directors is comprised of elementary and middle school students (3 third graders, 3 fourth graders, 7 sixth graders and 2 seventh graders and 1 eight grader).

They are collecting coats from anyone who wants to give used, dusty, tattered or lightly used. The organization is a non-profit or 501c3 and an official organization in Pennsylvania. For the 2019 season, they collected 5400 coats that were all handed out all over York County; this year their goal is to collect 6000 coats.

Coats of Friendship had collected all sizes, men, women and children. They also have a department of the charity that collects hats, gloves and scarves. What is extremely special for Coats of Friendship is that each coat has a personalized note attached handwritten by students and friends.

Coats of Friendship wants to make the world warmer by handing out coats to everyone and anyone who needs a warm jacket during the winter. No strings are ever attached, anyone who needs a coat can be given one without showing ID, verification of income or signing in. Coats of Friendship’s mission is to keep all people of York County warm this upcoming winter.
