$7,000 Goal

In 2026, the Friends of Lebanon Cemetery continues to grow from a grassroots preservation effort into a countywide initiative dedicated to research, education, and innovation. Our work centers on three priorities: documenting and sharing the rich history of York County’s African American families; assisting families of veterans who are interred without proper military headstones or markers; and equipping communities with the knowledge and tools to properly preserve historic cemeteries.

What began in April 2019 as a simple cleanup at Lebanon Cemetery in North York Borough quickly revealed something much larger. Beneath layers of soil and neglect were not only more than 1,200 buried headstones, but generations of stories—of faith leaders, laborers, educators, entrepreneurs, veterans, and nationally recognized figures whose lives shaped York County and beyond. These sacred spaces hold powerful narratives of resilience and achievement, yet many were overlooked for decades.

Today, our mission extends far beyond one cemetery. We are committed to preserving and interpreting African American cemeteries throughout York County—ensuring those laid to rest are remembered, respected, and restored to their rightful place in local and national history.

Past support has enabled us to make meaningful progress. We have partnered with state preservation offices and universities to document historic headstones and develop publicly accessible digital archives. We have led hands-on preservation projects—cleaning, resetting, and stabilizing stones—while hosting meaningful commemorations such as Wreaths Across America and G.R.A.C.E. for Veterans ceremonies to honor those who served.

Equally important is the work of research and storytelling. We invest countless hours in genealogical and historical research, reconnecting families with ancestors whose markers were lost for generations. We transform cemetery records into biographies, photographs, and educational materials that give voice to the people behind the names etched in stone.

To continue this work, we need sustained investment in research tools and technology. Funding supports access to archival databases, mapping and documentation software, recording equipment, and preservation supplies that allow us to properly identify, document, and protect fragile headstones. These tools are essential for uncovering accurate histories and ensuring that what we share is both meaningful and credible.

We are also expanding our educational programming to reach broader audiences. Through guided walks, public presentations, and partnerships with schools, churches, and civic groups, we bring these stories into classrooms and community spaces. Our innovative use of Augmented Reality (AR) tours allows visitors of all ages to stand at a gravesite and, through their mobile device, experience photographs, historical narratives, and family stories layered over the landscape. This technology bridges generations—engaging young learners through immersive storytelling while preserving the dignity and authenticity valued by older generations.

Expanding our AR programming requires investment in software development, content creation, research, and equipment. With additional support, we can create new digital experiences, integrate more biographies, and ensure that York County’s African American history remains visible, accessible, and engaging.

Your support empowers us to preserve fragile headstones, conduct thorough research, host educational programs, and develop innovative tools that bring the past into the present. A donation is more than financial assistance—it is a commitment to truth, remembrance, and community.

Together, we can ensure these lives are not erased, these sacred grounds are not forgotten, and these stories continue to inspire—one stone, one story, and one generation at a time.
