At Lebanon Cemetery our mission is to provide a dignified resting place in the largest African American cemetery in York County. The Lebanon Cemetery Company, a 501(c)(3) organization is committed to the daily care and maintenance of our cemetery.
Urgent Fundraising Campaign for Lebanon Cemetery Restoration and Preservation
Lebanon Cemetery, York, PA Needs Your Help!
Lebanon Cemetery, located at 1412 N. George St in York, PA, a historic resting place for many African-American families, has recently been struck by acts of vandalism in mid-May 2024. The estimated damage from toppled stones alone is approximately $5,000. However, this figure doesn't include several other unstable stones spread across our 5-acre property.
Our Current Challenge
Even before this disheartening incident, the Lebanon Cemetery Company, managed by dedicated volunteers elected by the families of those interred here, was grappling with the financial demands of daily maintenance. Compounded by decades of erosion and environmental damage, our hillside property requires significant preservation efforts. We must establish an annual budget specifically for the upkeep of our cemetery’s hardscape, which is severely impacted by gravity, soil shift, and stormwater runoff during extreme weather events.
Our Immediate Financial Needs
To ensure Lebanon Cemetery remains a safe and dignified resting place, we urgently need your financial support. Our annual expenses are as follows:
• Average Monthly Maintenance: $1,500 ($17,000/year)
• Signage: $7,500
• Contingency for Repairs: $3,000
• Yearly Insurance and Filing Fees: $1,300
• Equipment and Supplies: $5,000
• Postage and Printing: $500
• Installation of Cameras and Lighting for Enhanced Safety: $30,000
Critical Safety Concerns
One of our most pressing concerns is the erosion of the grounds, which poses an imminent danger of exposing vaults. The uneven terrain and numerous groundhog holes not only present significant safety hazards but also cause distress when items are displaced near gravesites.
How You Can Help
We cannot stress enough the urgency of addressing these critical issues. Your generous contribution will help us:
• Restore and stabilize toppled and unstable stones.
• Combat erosion to protect gravesites.
• Enhance safety with improved lighting and surveillance.
• Ensure the cemetery remains a respectful and serene environment.
