Nestled in the northeast corner of York city lies a hidden treasure known as Chrystal's Place, affectionately named after our founder. Chrystal embarked on her journey nearly 30 years ago armed with just a bag of clothing and canned goods, driven by a desire to provide essential resources to her community. What began as a personal mission evolved into a 501(c) 3 Nonprofit, thanks to the unwavering support of numerous individuals, organizations, and churches. Though Chrystal passed away in 2017, her sister Darlene Leonard has since taken the reins as our director, bringing with her two decades of experience as a case worker and a selfless spirit akin to Chrystal's.
Chrystal's Place serves as our beacon of hope, powered by the dedication of our volunteers. From unloading trucks and organizing donations to assisting neighbors with food and clothing distributions, our volunteers are the lifeblood of our operation. We're immensely grateful for the generosity of donors, whose contributions enable us to provide Christmas gifts, Easter baskets, homeless kits, fresh produce, and essential clothing items. Our community garden, located behind the center, not only fosters a sense of community but also educates children about agriculture, allowing them to witness the fruits of their labor firsthand.
Along with upwards of 50 volunteers the Northeast Neighborhood Association is made up of 12 board members, guiding our organization through various neighborhood initiatives and events such as Block Parties, National Night Out, Breast Cancer Awareness event with the Wellspan mobile Mammogram, and Cultural Celebrations, the latest addition inspired by feedback from our community. Partnering with Wellspan Outreach, we recently hosted a successful talk with a doctor event, with plans for more health-related initiatives in the pipeline.
Our collaboration with the Appell Center has provided our neighbors with access to enriching cultural experiences, including visits to the Strand Capital. As we prepare for a Cultural Celebration event on May 18th, we invite neighbors to share their cultural heritage with us, fostering an environment of inclusivity and appreciation for diversity. By actively listening, collaborating, and expressing gratitude, we aim to cultivate a community where every individual feels valued and supported, ultimately promoting wellness and unity.
Your generous donation goes a long way in us continuing to carry out our mission THANK YOU in advance!!
NENA's mission is to provide food, clothing, and resources to York residents. We also have events every year around health and wellness, and we celebrate culture and diversity. We connect people.
