Upstart Arts

A nonprofit organization

Upstart Arts is an all-volunteer, nonprofit theatrical collective dedicated to bringing the performing arts to public spaces, including the internet. All of our online and in-person performances are free to the public, with donations accepted.

Upstart Arts focuses on plays that are in the public domain but has also produced some contemporary plays and works with current artists on new works. Our most recent production was Wyrd Sisters, an adaptation of the book by Terry Pratchett, performed live via Zoom in February with a cast and crew from from around the world. and we will debut a radio play adaptation of Something Fresh by P.G. Wodehouse on May 10 on our YouTube channel.

The theater was founded in 2017 by Michelle Denise Norton and Gayle Eubank with backing from many members of the community, and we continue to expand our reach. Our work online since the beginning of the pandemic has brought together actors from York, State College, New York, Connecticut, Canada, Iowa, California, Arizona, Argentina, Scotland, New Zealand, Florida, Utah, Vietnam and many more spots throughout the country and the world.

Please watch our live performances and other videos on YouTube, and listen to our radio play adaptation of Something Fresh by P.G. Wodehouse, debuting May 10!

Mission

Upstart Arts is a new theater collective in York, Pa. We do art in public spaces. Our goal is to introduce more people in York to live theater by making it accessible to everyone. Our flagship program is a touring summer Shakespeare production that takes a full-length, full cast Shakespearean comedy into parks and other spaces around York County each summer. We also took part in the inaugural York Fringe Festival in 2018, and we recently completed a production of "The Importance of Being Earnest" at St. John's Episcopal Church in downtown York. Come see an encore production of Act 2 of "Earnest" during Give Local York on May 3, and be part of our summer show by auditioning for "A Midsummer Night's Dream" on May 22 or 23 and seeing the production July 19-28 at locations throughout York County.
