The York Junior Symphony Orchestra was organized in 1967. Its original 110 members performed their first concert on April 28, 1968 under the direction of Mr. Robert Snyder. Mr. Snyder continued as director until 1977. From 1977 through the spring of 1994, Dr. Priscilla Howard directed the symphony and built on its quality and reputation. The outstanding reputation of the YJSO then continued under the direction of Mrs. Kathleen Yeater for 34 years. In 2021, Mr. James Nackley took the helm of orchestra and continues to uphold its traditions.

Mission
The YJSO mission is to provide the finest quality orchestral training and performance opportunities for the youngest instrumental music students in our York County community.

Vision
The YJSO vision is to provide symphonic orchestral experiences that foster a pride and lifelong appreciation for the beauty of music in our musicians and families. We are equally proud to have a part in shaping tomorrow’s classical musicians and audiences.

Our Musicians
YJSO is typically comprised of 100 musicians, consisting of strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Individuals must audition annually for membership and are accepted based on their musical ability level. The members, ranging from 5th through 8th grade, represent area public schools and home-schooled students in York, Adams and Lancaster counties in Pennsylvania. YJSO performs at least two public concerts annually, in the fall and spring.

Any gift that you can give helps us to provide:
  1. Exceptional orchestral training from York's local directors and musicians
  2. Rehearsal and performance venues and opportunities
  3. Scholarships for tuition and summer camp opportunities

We can't do this without you. Investing in the future of music fosters discipline, leadership, tradition, and fulfills our vision of planting a lifelong appreciation for the beauty of classical music in York County.

Mission

The York Junior Symphony Orchestra (YJSO) provides the finest quality orchestral training and performance opportunities for the youngest music students in York County and its surrounding communities (grades 5 through 8). The orchestra consists of approximately 100 players (by audition) and is comprised of full string, woodwind, brass and percussion sections.

We perform at least two public concerts annually, one in the fall and another in spring. Occasionally, special performances for competition and demonstration are added to the group's itinerary.

YJSO members gain valuable skills in cooperation, discipline and tolerance as well as enhancement of each member's confidence, personal growth, and social skills. We also partner with educators, parents, and other community members to increase the exposure of the performing arts in York County.
