Historic preservation, education, and recreation . . .

In the depths of the Muddy Creek Valley, the Ma & Pa Railroad Heritage Village is a genuine York County gem. Our living history museum interprets the role of the Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad in the commercial and cultural life of an early 20th century village, a time when everyday life revolved around the family farm, the general store, and the railroad.

A visit to Muddy Creek Forks is like stepping back in time. Visitors can take a motorcar train ride through the scenic Muddy Creek Valley and interact with costumed interpreters in the A. M. Grove Store, mill, and grain elevator. These historic buildings and others on the museum site are remarkably unchanged from their appearance a century ago.

The Heritage Village preserves ten buildings in the Muddy Creek Forks National Historic District and 3.6 miles of the Ma & Pa Railroad main line. It presents an authentic understanding of village life and the role of the railroad through exhibits, oral histories, collections, and archives. Visitors can enjoy train rides along scenic Muddy Creek, which provides a unique vantage point on this unspoiled valley, and learn of village life from our knowledgeable interpreters.

Our museum welcomes school groups, scouts, home schoolers, and other groups with special visits designed to explore local history, early twentieth century technology and business, and the daily lives of our ancestors. In cooperation with Trout Unlimited, Muddy Creek is stocked with trout from the railroad. And the museum grounds provide creek access for fishermen and kayakers.

The Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad Preservation Society is an all-volunteer organization. About 60 volunteers, who log more than 7000 hours of service annually, do everything from track and equipment maintenance to recording oral histories and welcoming visitors. Your contribution supports their work to preserve this unique village and railroad for the enjoyment of future generations.

We thank you for your support and encourage you to come to the Ma & Pa Railroad Heritage Village this summer to see your contribution at work.
