Saving and Sharing Our Heritage
On September 27, 2024, Susquehanna National Heritage Area celebrated the preservation of the historic Mifflin Farm by holding a ceremonial groundbreaking for the Susquehanna Discovery Center and Heritage Park. The property is well documented as a station on the Underground Railroad, and is also significant to the 1863 Gettysburg Campaign. This five-to-eight year project will transform the 79 acre farm and historic buildings into a regional gateway visitor center, Underground Railroad and Civil War learning center, galleries for art of the Susquehanna River, and hiking trails. When finished, the facility will be a magnet for local, regional, and national visitors, and an economic generator for the entire region.
Initial improvements are complete to allow limited public access this summer for tours and programs. We ask your support for this project. Your investment through the 2025 Give Local York will help the Susquehanna Discovery Center and Heritage Park project by:

Your Heritage. Our Heritage.
A valuable lesson that many learned from our collective COVID experience is how essential access to nature, the outdoors, scenic vistas, and places of solitude are in times of stress. These places renew, refresh, and inspire. The work we do at Susquehanna National Heritage Area makes sure those places and resources are preserved, interpreted, and available to everyone now and for future generations. It is important to know they are there when needed.
While the pandemic was a challenge that hampered our programming and fundraising efforts, we were by no means idle. Here are some of our continuing projects and initiatives of the past year.
• Led the effort to save the historically important Mifflin property outside of Wrightsville. The early 1800’s house was an important and well documented station on the Underground Railroad. The farm itself was the site of a skirmish between Confederate troops and Union militia during the Gettysburg Campaign in 1863 prior to subsequent burning of the Wrightsville-Columbia covered Bridge over the Susquehanna River.
• Completion of a new exhibit on the Susquehannock People at the Zimmerman Center for Heritage. This exhibit complements and helps interpret the Native Lands County Park located behind the Zimmerman Center.
• Improving accessibility to Native Lands Park from the Zimmerman Center.
• Making our highly popular River Discovery Boat Tour Program even or interesting through the realization of our “Bigger Boat Initiative”. Stay tuned for information on our 2021 River tours!
• Laying the foundation for new and exciting educational programs for all ages at our facilities for 2021 and beyond.
Thank you for considering a gift to Susquehanna National Heritage Area. With your support, the best is yet to come! We look forward to hearing from you during Give Local York on May 7.
