“We were going to pull her out of childcare because it was putting us in debt”

“We needed to put that money towards rent so we can stay in a safe and comfortable home with less fear”

“I was worried where the next meal will come from, and how I was going to pay medical bills.”

These are the voices of local parents who were struggling with the most expensive line item in any family’s budget - the high cost of early childhood education. They are the voices of one in four York County families who stand in an economic gap of making too much to qualify for typical social assistance, yet too little to reliably cover monthly bills and unforeseen emergencies. They are the voices of lives changed by receiving a childcare scholarship from United Way of York County – made possible by the support of community members like YOU!

Many more of York County’s families are still struggling with the high cost of childcare. While on the journey to financial stability, access to childcare directly helps everyone WIN: the parents who maintain a steady income, the workplaces who get a reliable employee, and the children who get a strong and safe head start in their formative years of education!

Last year with YOUR support we were able to award $177,000 in childcare scholarships to dozens of York County families but many more need assistance.  Will you help? You can help children across York County thrive! Please give today to UWYC's early childhood education scholarship fund. Thank you!

Mission

We assist working households in our community on their journey toward financial stability by collaboratively and equitably reducing barriers to prosperity.

Background Statement

Our vision is for an equitably thriving York County.

For over 100 years, United Way of York County has worked in the York County community to improve people’s lives. It began as The York Welfare Federation, an organization that raised funds on behalf of 17 member agencies. For, a century, the organization served as a backbone of philanthropy in York County vetting programs to ensure donor dollars are staying local and going to high-impact programs.

United Way of York County has adapted over the years and now collaborates with other public and private organizations to engage the community in addressing the complex issues facing York County. Our focus is to help working families struggling to cover basic living expenses. This enables United Way of York County to tackle the immediate and continuing needs of York County families and individuals and to create real, lasting change that matters to you and our community.
