Background Statement

Women United is a community-based nonprofit dedicated to expanding opportunity for individuals and families facing barriers to housing, education, and employment in York County. Through innovative programs that combine workforce development, mentorship, and community partnerships, Women United works to create pathways that empower individuals to rebuild their lives and strengthen their communities.

Women United is committed to investing in the next generation through the Infinite Youth STEAM Program, which introduces youth to hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. The program currently provides STEAM enrichment for youth residing at the Bell Family Shelter and is designed to spark curiosity, creativity, connection and exposure to future career pathways.

One of the organization’s core initiatives is the Mirror Program, a workforce development program designed to support individuals returning to the community after incarceration and others facing significant barriers to employment. The program focuses on providing hands-on training in the skilled trades, mentorship, and supportive services that help participants successfully reenter the workforce and build sustainable careers.

Together, our programs reflect Women United’s mission to strengthen communities by creating opportunities for both youth and adults to access education, skills training, and supportive networks that promote long-term success.

Needs

York County continues to face barriers to employment for individuals returning from incarceration and others with limited access to workforce opportunities. Many individuals struggle to secure stable employment due to gaps in work history and lack of access to structured training and industry-recognized credentials.

Women United currently operates the Mirror Program, a workforce development initiative that supports individuals working to rebuild their lives through skill development and employment pathways. As the program grows, Women United is seeking to expand its training curriculum to strengthen the educational resources available to participants and increase opportunities for certification and career advancement in the skilled trades.

There is also a need for more youth enrichment opportunities in the community. While the Infinite Youth STEAM Program currently serves children at the Bell Family Shelter, Women United is working to expand the program to reach more youth throughout the York community and provide greater access to hands-on STEAM learning experiences.

Expanding these programs will help increase workforce readiness for adults while also providing meaningful educational opportunities for youth.
