York Twinning Association is a volunteer organization, created in the 1950's, to foster friendships, an understanding, and mutual respect between the people of York and people of other nationalities. It is supported solely by membership dues and fundraising activities.  In 1954, Dr. Victoria Lyles, the Director of Elementary Education in the city of York and Marguerite Eriksson, the first educator to teach French in York City elementary schools, traveled to Arles, France as part of the first cultural exchange between York and Arles.  York and Arles are the oldest, continuously operating 'sister cities' in the world!  In 1981, Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Germany was added as a second sister city to York.  York Twinning Association has provided the opportunity for hundreds of students, teachers, and other citizens to participate in educational and cultural exchanges with the people of Arles, France and Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Germany.  The memories and friendships formed last a lifetime!  Monies raised will be used for student scholarships and to provide cultural experiences for our citizens of York and and visitors from our sister cities.

In additional to cultural exchanges, York Twinning Association holds four yearly seasonal events.  Spring - Wine Tasting Social, Summer - Picnic and Bastille Day celebration, Fall - Oktoberfest celebration, Winter - 12th Night Holiday Tour
