Friends & Neighbors of PA exists for one reason: to show up for our unhoused neighbors — consistently, respectfully, and without conditions.

We believe everyone is a part of the neighborhood -- even those who live without four walls. We meet our neighbors where they are. We welcome them when they arrive.

Your gift helps fill the many gaps our unhoused neighbors experience daily.

Here's how we fill those gaps ...

Our coordinated street outreach team walks thousands of steps each week across York City, Hanover, Red Lion, and throughout York County to meet neighbors where they are — in camps, in cars, and on sidewalks.

  • We guide someone to shelter when they’re ready.
  • We provide survival gear (hand warmers, water bottles, medical supplies).
  • We encourage them to visit our Beacon Day Center for social interaction and resource assistance.
  • But more than anything, we build relationships. We talk to them. We listen. We ask them how they are doing. We honor and respect their privacy and walk away if they wish.

Each conversation builds trust.

Each visit deepens understanding.

And through those relationships, we connect neighbors to the right services through our collaborative network of providers.

At The Beacon, our daytime community space open four afternoons a week, neighbors are welcomed to sit down and rest a while.

Here in our nurturing space, they can:

  • Meet with advocates and service providers, including the UPMC street medical team

  • Receive their mail

  • Rest on a cot or recliner

  • Charge their phones and use WiFi

  • Share coffee and conversation

  • Grab a snack

  • Get a haircut

  • Bring their children into a safe place to play if not in school

The Beacon is more than a shelter from the weather. It is a place of dignity, stability, and human connection.

Together, street outreach and The Beacon Day Center form a continuum of care — reaching out, welcoming in, and walking alongside each person toward next steps.

We don’t just call ourselves Friends & Neighbors.

We are Neighbors in Action serving as Friends at Their Side.

Why Give Local York Matters

In 2025, our team:

  • Connected with 1,637 unhoused neighbors
  • Traveled over 1,500 miles reaching people across York County
  • Welcomed an average of 100 visits per day at The Beacon

We're grateful for the supply donations and support we receive.

What we need most now is funding for the people who do this work -- the advocates who walk those 1,500 miles, who staff The Beacon, who build relationships over weeks and months.

Your gift today funds the team that shows up in the neighborhood each day.

Our Goal: $35,000

Your donation will help us:

  • Keep our five-person outreach team on the street and at The Beacon Day Center
  • Cover gas costs to reach neighbors across York County
  • Provide flexible gap funding for things like bus passes, and fees that can't wait for grant cycles
  • Staff The Beacon four days a week so neighbors have a place to rest and connect to services
